Luke Walton struggling to find minutes for veteran point guard Jose Calderon.
The Los Angeles Lakers have gone through a rough stretch as of late. The team has dealt with numerous injuries as well as issues with the rotation as a result of so many players getting banged up. Veteran point guard Jose Calderon has been one of those players that have dealt with injury problems this season and now that he’s healthy, head coach Luke Walton has found it difficult to find minutes for the journeyman as he told Mark Medina of the L.A. Daily News:
Despite calling Calderon “ready,” Walton said he has found it “tricky” to integrate the 32-year-old veteran into the lineup for a few reasons.
Although it has been difficult for Walton to integrate a healthy Calderon back into the rotation, the first-year head coach admits the coaching staff wants to find minutes for him, via Medina:
“We’d love to find opportunities to get Jose out there,” Walton said. “If it comes, we’ll give it to him.”
One of the reasons for Calderon’s lack of playing time has been rookie Brandon Ingram taking on a different role. Walton has given Ingram ball-handling duties as of late, and the tactic seems to be working with the Duke product capable of taking on the responsibility.
With D’Angelo Russell now healthy along with other backcourt players like Lou Williams, Jordan Clarkson, and Nick Young, Calderon may have become a backup strictly to address any injury issues that may occur moving forward. Ingram’s versatility gives the Lakers a bit of an edge or at least another option, but if the losing continues, Walton may have to mix things up with Calderon having a bigger role.
